Sometimes White Is Better

When we first moved our bedroom to the basement, I wanted things to be as bright as I could get them since we only had one window.  In years past, I had decorated with reds and yellows only to find it maddening.  Then I went with the colors of pale greens, creams, and peach tones.   It was so much better, softer on the eyes and soothing...but still not my dream.  I painted all of the beadboard cream which did an amazing transformation!  I had a vision in my head of all blues and whites...it has taken me many years to "tweek" everything, but I thnk I finally have it!

I painted the door blue, trying to break up all of the white back then.  But what I didn't realize is how dark it would make the corner that is blocked from light.  I've lived with it for all of these years until today!  I couldn't stand it any longer!

Our ceilings are 7 and 1/2 feet tall with the drop ceiling that we have to have.  I have wanted to make this door more of a focal point but the blue wasn't doing it.

Much better in white...my opinion of course.  And that's all that matters, lol.

It's amazing just how much brighter this little nook is after painting!

I think later, I will rip off the moulding and do something more detailed.  Heck, I may just do it tonight!

I want an older look with a straight piece at the top instead of the mitered corners.

But just look at the difference on being brighter...and this is with no overhead lights on.

Well, I did it with the moulding!  After looking at how unfinished it looked, I just had to do it!

I still wanted the arched piece hung, but now I have an option of not "having" to have something hung there.  It looks so much better doesn't it?
I took off the detailed moulding and replaced it with 1x2"s cut level with the top of the door.  Then added a plank along the top with some wood to look like crown moulding.
Didn't cost me a cent!

I'm a hoarder when it comes to not throwing away wood....

I took the stuff off the top of the old gun cabinet and added some plates. I love to decorate with them!

I have had my time decorating with colors, but now I am in love with white.  I love touches of color thrown in like with my fabrics, but as for most everything else, sometimes white is just better!

  4. Hi Melanie, I agree sometimes white is better, especially if you need to brighten up a spot. I acquired a sideboard not long ago that is in timber and didn't mind the look for a while but I am thinking I really need to paint it as it is in a dark corner of the room and I know white will make a huge difference.I have to agree with Sandy though the blue door looked really pretty too, well on screen anyway! Your home is just so amazing.. love it all, take care, Maryann
